šŸ›¶ Day 2: Full Pirogue Navigation - Isolated Island Villages

Activities: Wake up to birdsong, hearty breakfast. Depart at 8am for a full day of exploration by motorised traditional pirogue with your Serere pirogue guide. Navigate through the aquatic labyrinth of the UNESCO-listed Saloum Delta: crossing calm sea channels, exploring bolongs (narrow waterways between islands), navigating between the majestic mangrove trees. Exceptional bird watching throughout the day: colonies of white pelicans by the hundreds feeding in coordinated groups, pink flamingos in elegant formations, grey and goliath herons standing still watching for fish, African cormorants drying their spread wings, fish eagles soaring, colourful kingfishers. Stop at a first isolated Serere fishing village on an island: Falia, Djirnack or Faoye. Discover traditional island life centred on fishing and oyster farming. Meet the very welcoming inhabitants, visit millet granaries, observe ancestral fishing techniques. Children will greet you with their smiles. Picnic lunch on a deserted island beach: freshly caught grilled fish, rice, vegetables, tropical fruits. Swimming possible in calm shallow waters (mixed fresh and salt water). Afternoon continued exploration: visit ancient shell mounds (shell tumuli several metres high formed centuries ago), navigation through deep mangroves harbouring incredible biodiversity. Stop at a second village to discover local crafts: basket weaving, pottery, wood carving. Watch the return of the fishing pirogues in the late afternoon, a lively and colourful scene. Return to the ecolodge at sunset with magical golden light over the delta. Grilled fish dinner and local specialities. Free evening to enjoy the tranquillity of the site, stargazing.
